Optimising the farrowing process and lactation period in sows is very important for animal welfare and farm performance. With her colostrum and milk, the sow provides passive immunity, energy and essential nutrients to her piglets. In short, a good milk yield is fundamental for uniform piglet growth. In a study in China, we tested the effect of Pro-mac on the farrowing process and lactation period in sows.
Pro-mac
Pro-mac is a liquid nutritional supplement to promote feed intake and overall health of sows. The unique composition of Pro-Mac is specifically aimed at providing extra energy and building blocks. It also stimulates the animal’s natural immune system. Moreover, Pro-Mac has a tasty taste that increases water intake, which correlates with increased feed intake.
Trial with sows
In this study, one group of sows was given Pro-mac via drinking water for six consecutive days from the moment they entered the farrowing house. Another group of sows, in the same department as the test group, served as control and did not receive any Pro-mac after entering the farrowing house.

Sows in the Pro-mac group showed positive trends. Cumulative feed intake was on average almost 1 kg higher than in the control group, possibly indicating a stimulation of appetite or metabolism. Also, litter weights at weaning were higher, which was also reflected in average litter growth. This may indicate better milk production or more vital piglets in the Pro-mac group. No negative effects were observed on the farrowing process, sow body condition or piglet survival.
Although not all differences were statistically significant, the consistently positive trends in feed intake and litter growth indicate a potentially beneficial effect of Pro-mac. Pro-Mac thus appears to be a valuable supplement for sows in the farrowing house to favour lactation.
